Tryptamine is a monoamine alkaloid and a member of the indole alkaloids (being based around the indole ring). It is the backbone for a wide variety of other alkaloids, including the neurotransmitters serotonin and melotonin, which are collectively known as the tryptamines. Trace amounts of tryptamine itself are found in the brains of mammals where it is believed to act as a neurotransmitter or neuromodulator.
