Psilocybin is a phosphorylated form of the psilocin alkaloid and occurs naturally alongside it in the psilocybe genus of mushrooms. When ingested it is metabolised into psilocin (the active metabolite) and it is therefore psilocin's prodrug. As a result of the phosphate replacing the hydroxyl group, psilocybin is more stable than psilocin and can be stored for longer without degradation.
